STS Wins £2million Order for MEMS Production Equipment
Surface Technology Systems plc (STS) (LSE: SRTS), a leader in plasma processing technologies used in the manufacturing and packaging of advanced electronic devices, today announced that it has received an order worth over £2 million from a major manufacturer for Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) production equipment. The order includes multiple Pegasus processing chambers for deep silicon micromachining of MEMS for use in consumer end-products. The Pegasus source offers significantly higher silicon etch rates than other deep reactive ion etch (DRIE) tools currently on the market. STS offers a choice of two cluster platforms for multiple chamber operation; the VPX, which is supplied with one vacuum cassette and up to three process chambers, and the CPX which has two vacuum cassettes and up to four process chambers. John Saunders, CEO of STS said, "We are very excited by this order, as not only is it one of the largest orders STS has won recently, but it underlines the success of this relatively new product which was launched eight months ago. We feel it also verifies the capability of our new cluster systems to satisfy the requirements of production customers." David Haynes, STS' Sales & Marketing Director added, "We see this order as further proof that the major MEMS manufacturers are successfully using or selling their devices for high volume applications such as automotive or consumer products." This new order increases STS's current order book to over £12.1 million, all of it for delivery in 2006 and much of it in the first half. This is the highest level of order book STS has had since 2001.

[Anatomy and Pathology] Increasing Incidence of Ophthalmic Lymphoma in Denmark from 1980 to 2005

purpose. To evaluate patient characteristics and incidence of ophthalmic lymphoma in Denmark during the period 1980 to 2005.

methods. All patients in Denmark with a diagnosis of ophthalmic lymphoma during the period 1980 to 2005 were retrieved from three different population-based registries. Specimens from all patients were collected and reclassified according to the World Health Organization (WHO) classification system. Incidence rates were calculated by using Poisson regression models.

results. A total of 228 patients with a histologically verified diagnosis of ophthalmic lymphoma were included. There was an equal distribution of males and females. The most frequent lymphoma subtype was extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma (MALT [mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue] lymphoma, 55.5%) and most cases were located in the orbit (56.8%). High-grade lymphoma subtypes were found more frequently in males than in females. Incidence rates were highly dependent on the patient’s age. For all ages, a statistically significant annual average increase of 3.4% during the 26-year period was found. This increase was primarily due to a rise in the incidence of MALT lymphoma.

conclusions. In the Danish population ophthalmic lymphoma consists primarily of orbital MALT lymphoma. Although it is a rare disease in mostly elderly patients, the incidence of ophthalmic lymphoma is increasing at a rapid pace.

Comparative Study of P19 EC Stem Cell Differentiation in between Conventional Hanging Drop and the Zebrafish Chorion as a Bio-derived Material

Various materials including glass and polymers have been widely used for stem cell culture due to their biocompatibility. However, the roles of these materials are fundamentally limited because they cannot realize or imitate the complex biological functions of living tissues, except in very simple cases. Here, the development of a bio-derived material suitable for stem cell culture and improvement of differentiation efficiency to specific cell lineages with no stimulating agents by using a chorion obtained from a fertilized zebrafish egg through the removal of the yolk and embryonic cell mass from the egg is reported. Mouse P19 EC stem cells introduced into the empty chorion form a uniform embryoid body (EB) without addition of any inducing agent. It is demonstrated that the zebrafish chorion with nanopores improves efficiencies greatly in the EB formation, cell proliferation, and lineage-specific differentiations compared to those of the conventional hanging drop culture method.
